The Basic Rules

Basic poker rules

The first thing we would need to start a poker game is a deck of 52 cards, without the jokers.

Objective of the game

Your objective would be to make the best possible combination with five cards. This combination is to be made with the two cards in your hand (handed to you by the dealer and only you could see them) and by any three of the five community cards that are displayed for all players.

The player with the best combination will be awarded the pot which will be made by the bets of all players. .

Dealing the Cards

In each hand there must be at least 2 players and not more than 10. In large tournaments where there are many players, many tables would be set up but no one table should exceed ten players. Before the beginning of any hand every player must pull a card, and the dealer would become the person with the highest card. In online poker the cards are automatically dealt by the application.

The player to the immediate left of the dealer will begin the play. The round will continue clockwise.

Mandatory Bets (Blinds)

The Blinds are mandatory bets to be made at the beginning of the game. The small blind is the mandatory bet made by the first player located to the immediate left of the dealer. The big blind is made by the second player. The big blind is equivalent to twice the value of the small blind.

In large tournaments at a very advanced level, there is a bet called the Ante, which is made before the dealer hands the first set of cards. It gives you the right to play since you have paid your contribution towards the pot.

Open Bets

Open betting is made by those players which are not in any of the two mandatory bets positions (blinds) when it’s their turn to play. When faced with a bet, the other players or opponents could:

How cards are dealt in a poker hand

Development of a Poker Hand

A typical poker hand involves four different stages, which are the following:

Stage 1: Pre-Flop

During this initial hand or Pre- Flop, two cards are handed face down to each player. These are each player's private cards.

Stage 2: the Flop

The dealer will place three cards face up in the middle of the table. These three cards are called the Flop and are community cards, which means that they can be used by all players.

Stage 3: the Turn

The dealer places a fourth card face up on the table, next to the previous three community cards. This is called the Turn.

Stage 4: the River

A fifth and last community card is displayed, again face up and next to the previous four community cards. This is called the River.

After each one of the mentioned rounds, a round of betting takes place. During the Pre-Flop, players may either match the Big Blind to continue in the game, raise the Big Blind or fold.

During the following rounds, players will have the option to match, raise, check or fold. Finally, once the five community cards have been displayed, the table is complete.

With the five community cards on the table and the two private cards in hand, the players would make the best possible combination with any five cards. After the River, all players remaining on the hand will show their cards.

The winner will be the player with the best card combination. The winner will take all the chips from the Pot, that is those that were placed on the table during the 4 betting rounds. In the event of a tie the pot will be shared between the tied players.
